HMC Visual Team – A sample project in a daily production pipeline
There is no doubt about modern computer graphics being a form of art. In an enterprise scale, the art production is a result of the collective efforts of many artists and technicians who collaborate in an efficient production pipeline. A production pipeline is similar to the generic assembly line, in which each worker performs their tasks from creating assets to the final output.
The main difference between creating art and generic consumer goods, is that the creative process incorporates with an iterative review cycle, where the final output can be refined. Constant iteration is a great way to achieve high quality standards and at the HMC Visual team this is just daily practice.
Heerema Marine Contractors understands the importance of visual communication, where 3D images and movies help to communicate the ideas and the simulations help project teams to communicate with their environment. These methods allow Heerema to capture valuable information and visualize them into an interactive output, which is making the challenging offshore projects more efficient and safer for their project teams.
The pipeline starts with 2D-3D drawings of a project, where they are converted or modelled for creating realistic assets. The initial process can be challenging if the models are created from reference images/drawings or low-quality client model conversions. After the model creation, coloring and texturing take it to the a new level to make it look more realistic. According to the purpose of the final output, there are different procedures involved: for animation this is a film production pipeline and for simulation it is a simulation(game) pipeline.
The installation of ULQ Jacket for Maersk Culzean is a sample project of my daily work at Heerema Marine Contractors:
Models created for Maersk Culzean:
- ULQ and CPF installation and gripper piles;
- ULQ Jacket – Complete model of the jacket, including spreader bars, sling retainers, rigging arrangement and textures;
- Deck layout for Thialf;
- Deck layouts for barges carrying piles.
